Behavior and light are figuratively and literally entwined.
Behavior and light are figuratively and literally entwined.
Filmed in Super 8 in 1978 and shown at the Clocktower Gallery in 1978 and the John Gibson Gallery, both in New York City, in 1980, the installation features homing pigeons in a cage that frames a looping projection of the same birds and their unconstrained activity. The movements and sounds of the caged birds can be observed reacting to the sounds and images of their recorded selves.
The projected images of the birds are scaled up to emphasize their movement through the frame and implied passage beyond, heightened by the darkness of the gallery space.
